Make 2021 Your
S.M.A.R.T. Year
As we enter into 2021 all of us are looking forward to a
return of life as it was before the pandemic or normalcy. I think back to the security measures
established at airports after 9-11 that have now become normal. While none of
can predict what will become the new normal, we can take control of that which
affects us and our families.
What is a resolution? One definition of resolution that made
sense is to make a firm decision to do or not to do something and that brought
to mind the S.M.A.R.T method of goal setting. The resolution (goal) should be Specific,
Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. For
example, losing 30 pounds in two weeks is specific but may not be attainable.
The S.M.A.R.T. method can also be applied not only to personal
goals; it can also be applied to professional goals. The question that now arises is what will you
do and what goals will you set to make 2021 your S.M.A.R.T. year personally and
professionally?
Those of you who follow baseball know that Yogi was known for his famous or infamous sayings. For example, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Both of his bits of wisdom can be applied to today’s economic situation. Twelve months ago who would have thought that in the future (today) that our economy would be in a situation that has been compared to the great depression and who would have thought that unemployment would be at near record highs.
Today we are in a new era and indeed we are at fork in the road and companies and individuals have had to make painful decisions. Companies and individuals are at a fork in the road. The major difference between Yogi’s fork and our fork is that our fork allows us to make choices and it is our attitude that determines which fork to take. We can accept the roadblocks that are thrown in our way or we can adjust our attitudes and look for ways to move or go around those roadblocks. The choice is yours to make so when you come to a fork in the road - take the time to choose whether you will be hindered by the roadblock or find a way around to bigger and better things.
